Walking or Cycling to the Campus
Walking The Campus is located approximately 1 mile from the centre of Galashiels, and is therefore potentially within comfortable walking and cycling distance from the town centre and the bus station. Pedestrian routes to the Campus include traffic free footpaths, traffic free routes shared with cyclists, and pavements alongside roads. In particular the Campus is accessible from the ‘black path’ a traffic free route which cuts through Tweedbank and Galashiels and which connects with Melrose, Darnick and Gattonside (see figure 1). These routes are generally well maintained and well lit with safe crossings in appropriate places.

CyclingThe College is accessible via a number of off and on road signed cycle routes within the Scottish Borders (see figure 2). With the exception of the ‘black path’ there are, however, no designated on or off road cycle routes within Galashiels itself and this may be a barrier to some potential cyclists who may feel uncomfortable cycling alongside car traffic.

On site pedestrians are separated from traffic on paved paths. There are no designated cycle routes on site so cyclists must dismount or share the road with vehicles.
Safe pedestrian and cyclist crossings are in place where necessary, and traffic calming measures are in place
There are 30 sheltered Sheffield Stands (3 separate shelters with space for 10 bikes each see figure 3) and 7 cycle lockers (in two different locations). All cycle parking is shared amongst staff, students and visitors. Cycle parking facilities are well spaced out over the Campus area so as to be convenient for staff and students arriving from most directions, and also located within short walking distances of building entrances.

Excellent showering facilities and secure lockers are available for both staff and students and staff also have the benefit of lockable changing rooms.
