Plumbing Innovation from former Student
Borders businessman, qualified plumber, inventor and former student of Borders College, Ross Dickinson, has recently become a Finalist in the 2011 Barclay’s Business ‘Take one Small Step Competition” as well as winning the ‘New Start Scotland Bright Business Idea Competition’ earlier in the year. He will be representing Scotland in ‘The Pitch’ in London on the 18th of November in the famous Pasha nightclub after winning the Scottish heats of UK’s Premier Small Business Competition on Thursday the 18th of this month and experience entrepreneur in strategic planning Norma Corlette has agreed to mentor Ross for the competition.

Over the last three years Walkerburn plumber Ross has been developing his unique new device which provides an affordable quick and easy temporary repair for burst and frost damaged water pipes or pipes that have been perforated accidentally. The device is designed for anyone to use and is an extremely quick and effective way of stopping the flow of water from a burst pipe whilst still being able to use the pipe until a plumber can be called to make a permanent repair.
Ross attended Borders College and won the ‘Plumbing Student of the Year Award’.
“After leaving school with little or no qualifications I went from job to job never really feeling satisfied with what I was doing. I started at Borders College on the full time plumbing course hoping I would be lucky enough to get an apprenticeship. At College I received a lot of encouragement and picked up valuable skills fairly quickly due to my experienced lecturers doing a great job. R A Walter Plumbing and heating kindly gave me an apprenticeship which covered the full spectrum of plumbing and heating.
After leaving school I was diagnosed with dyslexia and I never really had the confidence to do anything outside my comfort zone. Going to Borders College and learning my trade helped me no end and I believe it has given me the confidence to start my own plumbing business and go on to invent and develop the Kibosh which is launching soon! I especially want to thank lecturers John Rutherford, John Gilbert, John Rafferty, Brian Gibson and Ronnie Walter who helped me get to where I am today!”
Ross believes the Kibosh Emergency Pipe Repair will help people in a desperate situation caused by a burst water pipe and that the innovative device will hopefully eliminate the damage and destruction caused by flooding in the home or workplace.
